Database Cost Optimization Calculator
Model standard RDS Multi-AZ DB instances with one standby: compute, storage, and separately billed IOPS replicate; backup remains single. Multi-AZ DB Cluster is out of scope. Published-list estimate only. The math runs in your browser — your numbers never leave this page.

Decision guidance
Database cost and resilience decisions this calculator can test
This database model covers representative RDS and managed-Postgres instance, storage, provisioned IOPS, backup, replica, Multi-AZ, and reserved-capacity costs. It distinguishes removable waste from resilience or recovery requirements that must remain.
Questions it answers
Are provisioned IOPS separately billed for the selected storage type, and how much headroom must remain above measured use?
Which read replicas are removable after required HA and read-scaling capacity is protected?
Does disabling Multi-AZ remove waste, or does it simply remove required availability and durability?
When it returns zero or refuses a claim
IOPS reduction returns zero on storage where IOPS are bundled, and separately billed IOPS cannot be reduced below measured use plus headroom.
Replica removal is capped at the count above the stated HA or read-scaling requirement.
Disabling required Multi-AZ returns zero because resilience is not sold as savings; reserved coverage also warns when rightsizing has not happened first.
Verify against your invoice
Match instance class, running hours, deployment mode, replicas, storage GB, IOPS, and backup GB to database invoice lines.
Document the required replica count, Multi-AZ requirement, backup-retention floor, and recovery objectives with the service owner.
Compare reserved coverage only after instance rightsizing and non-required replicas have been evaluated.
The calculator remains a published-list scenario, not a quote or your actual bill. Use the source links and invoice lines below before acting.
Representative published-list prices, re-verified on a freshness schedule. When a rate goes stale or a resource is not in the verified table, the total is suppressed rather than guessed.
